Using the U17-5 in Telford
Telford was designated a new town in 1963, and its estates run from 1960s and 1970s housing to newer ones such as Lawley, planned for around 3,500 homes. Where you have a metre of side access, the U17-5 digs footings, drives and drains.
Much of the town is built over the old East Shropshire coalfield, and the council warns that many mine shafts are not on any plan. Before you dig footings or a soakaway, check the free coal mining map; if you hit a void, stop and call 0800 288 4242.
For a new drive, Telford & Wrekin Council takes a £250 application for a dropped kerb (£200 back if it is refused) and wants 6 m between the house and the footway. With approval, the U17-5 and the dumper dig out a permeable drive that needs no planning permission.
Before the U17-5 arrives
- Check the coal mining map if you are in a Development High Risk Area.
- Measure the access: 1.0 m clear.
- Run a LinesearchbeforeUdig search first.
- Have an adult on site for the handover.
