Using the U17-5 in Coventry
The U17-5 suits Coventry homes with a metre of side access, such as the 1930s redbrick semis of Canley, for footings, drives and drainage runs.
For a new drive, Coventry City Council wants at least 4.0 m from the back of the pavement to the house, and charges £130 to handle a dropped kerb with its own contractor. Once that is agreed, the U17-5 takes out the old surface and the dumper clears it.
Much of Coventry sits on glacial clay and till, which the British Geological Survey warns can settle unevenly, and gypsum in the Mercia Mudstone can attack concrete. Footings here should follow building control and your engineer's spec.
