Everything you need to operate this machine safely and confidently.
Using the U17-5 on a Birmingham job
Over a third of Birmingham homes are semi-detached (35.6% in the 2021 Census), and that is the house type the U17-5 suits best. With its tracks pulled in it needs a metre of clear width, then opens out to 1,240 mm once it is through, for a steadier dig.
If you are widening a drive, Birmingham City Council's dropped crossing policy asks for a forecourt at least 4.75 m deep and a crossing at least 2.75 m wide, and only the council's contractors may build it. Get that approval first; the U17-5 then digs out the drive and the high-tip dumper moves the spoil.
South-east of the Birmingham Fault the ground is mostly Mercia Mudstone, which the British Geological Survey calls generally impermeable. Dig a test pit and check the drainage before you commit to a soakaway there.
Before the U17-5 arrives
- Measure the narrowest point between the road and the dig: the U17-5 needs 1.0 m.
- Run a free LinesearchbeforeUdig search for cables and pipes.
- If the drop is inside the A4540 Middleway, mention it when you book: that is the Clean Air Zone.
- Have an adult on site for the handover and the safety briefing.
