BOMAG BW120 AD-5 Quick Start Guide
BOMAG BW120 Roller
This is a Quick Start guide only. It does not replace formal training or the full operator's manual.
🅿️1. Before Starting
- Park on firm, level ground.
- If rolling asphalt, fill the water tank with clean water (this stops material sticking to the drums).
- Sit correctly and fasten your seatbelt (ROPS machine).
- Put on hearing protection.
- Make sure the travel lever is in the centre / parking-brake position before starting.
📌 Do not inspect fluids, remove covers, or adjust settings. If something looks unusual, do not start - contact us.
📌 Ventilation: do not run the engine in enclosed or partly enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation. Exhaust fumes are toxic and can cause unconsciousness or death.
🎛️2. Controls You Need to Know
- Travel / direction lever - forward = forward, back = reverse; further = faster. Centre = brake; detent = parking brake.
- Vibration switch (button on the lever / rotary selector) - on or off.
- Drum selector - front / front+rear / rear (only change with vibration off).
- Water spray switch - 0 (off), 1-4 (intermittent), MAX (continuous).
- Steering wheel - steers at the central pivot (the machine bends in the middle).
- Throttle - engine speed (MIN / MAX).
- Emergency stop - press to stop; twist to release. For emergencies only - never use it as the service brake.
📌 All other controls and settings are factory set and must not be changed.
🔑3. Starting
- Throttle to MIN. Turn the key on and let the warning lamps test.
- Cold weather: allow the pre-heat to complete before cranking.
- Crank for a maximum of 20 seconds at a time. Start only from the seat.
- Do not use starting aids such as ether.
- Warm up before working.
📌 Stop and inform us if a warning light stays on or the engine sounds abnormal.
🚧4. Operating
- Fasten the seatbelt; throttle up; ease the travel lever gently in the direction you want.
- Roll in straight, overlapping passes.
- Switch vibration ON only once moving at working speed; switch it OFF about one machine-length before stopping.
- Never run vibration while stationary, or on hard, frozen or concrete surfaces.
- Check the effect of vibration on nearby buildings, walls and buried services.
- The seat has an automatic brake sensor. If you leave the seat while moving, the machine brakes itself; to drive again, return the travel lever to the parking-brake position first.
🔰5. New Operator Guidance
- Use gentle lever movements - the machine stops by easing the lever to centre. Get used to the articulated steering at low speed. Use one control at a time.
⛰️6. Travelling & Slopes (Prevents Overturning)
- On slopes, travel straight up or down only - never across a slope.
- Keep a safe distance from excavation edges, embankments, trenches and kerbs - risk of overturning.
- Apply the parking brake whenever stopped on an incline.
📌 Be extremely careful on wet, loose or uneven ground.
📌 Overhead power lines: keep well clear. If the machine ever touches a power line, stay on the machine, warn others to keep away, drive clear of the danger zone if you can, and have the power switched off.
🛑7. What to Watch Out For (Stop & Inform Us)
- Any warning light. Loss of drive or braking. Water not spraying.
- Vibration not switching on/off correctly. Leaks, unusual noises or burning smells.
- Any contact with kerbs, manholes, walls, services or structures.
📌 Do not continue operating to 'finish the job'.
📌 Refuelling: engine off, key removed. No smoking or naked flames. Clean spills before restarting.
🏁8. Stopping
- Ease the travel lever to centre, then to the parking-brake detent. Throttle to MIN and idle for about 2 minutes.
- Key off and removed; battery isolator off. Chock the drums on any slope. Use the steps and handholds - never jump.
📌 Never leave the machine running unattended.
🔒 Never run vibration while stationary or on hard surfaces, and never use the emergency stop as the service brake. Travel straight up and down slopes only.
